Prekop, whom I appreciate very much for his solo stuff as well as for his work with The Sea & Cake surprises me twice: First, he delivers a new album which has nothing to do with what he did before, second there’s this great video, the first one of a Prekop track I know of. To those not familiar with The Sea & Cake (TSC) and Prekop’s solo efforts I’d say their/his music could be best described as indie pop with brazilian and electronic influences – although this only roughly describes TSC’s and Prekop’s unique (and somewhat similar) style. And of course not to forget John McEntire of Tortoise and Soma Electronic Music studios is also part of TSC, which agains adds a certain aspect to their style.
In contrast, “Old Punch card” is inspired by musique concrète and early electronic music. And in fact, Prekop’s sometimes noisy, sometimes ambient and often loop-based tracks are referencing the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
Btw, while searching the web I found this BBC documentary of the Radiophonic Workshop which so far I have just taken a glimpse at but which seems absolutely worth watching:
