Perrache – Letter to Jane EP
Disclosure: I am a fan of the music of Joachim Henn and his bandmates since I discovered Ma Chérie For Painting. MCFP were a nineties experimental (post-)rock group, consisting of Niko Lazarakopoulos, Christian Steckroth, Karlheinz Harfner, and of course Joachim who at present releases as Perrache. According to him, MCFP may have been “one of the most famous non-famous indie bands”.
So while my MCFP records sat on the shelf unplayed for a while – my last extensive listening phase of their œuvre took place in 2015 – I could draw from my still well-functioning long-term memory (ha) when receiving an order from Joachim whom I immediately remembered as a member of said group. Shortly after, he sent a demo cassette under his moniker Perrache, titled ‘Letter to Jane EP’.
It was the flourishing time of the nineties’ transeuropean mailorder scene with such great labels as L’Age D’or, Kitty-Yo, Wurlitzer Jukebox, Static Caravan, Earworm and many more.
The old, obviously multiply overdubbed C-60 cassette (Brand: “Palladium”) further triggered my interest, before even playing – and thereafter convincing me to release it, even though the SPT schedule was pretty full for the rest of 2025.
Joachim’s charm offensive in guise of the Letter to Jane EP raised the following questions:
Is the EP’s title referencing ‘Letter to Jane: An Investigation About a Still’, the experimental companion documentary of Jean-Luc Godard’s movie ‘Tout va bien’?
What is the story or rather: What is the connection to Perrache’s musical mélange entailing Kosmische, Kraut, Analogue-experimental, Electronic Art-Pop, to name just a few of the influences I believe can be identified?
To conclude: This is, in summary, sound art at its best, challenging listeners to come up with their own interpretations, so the train of Inspiration will keep travelling.
